Avoid Getting Caught in a Paper Jam
Over a quarter of all printer repairs are due to paper jams. Once a paper jam occurs, it is almost certain that printer service will be required to fully resolve the issue. However, by following these tips, you can avoid paper jams entirely.
01. Maintain a Cool, Dry Environment for Your Paper
When the seasons change, our printer technicians notice an increase in paper jams. When the humidity level is high, intermittent paper jams may occur as a result of the moisture in the paper. To avoid seasonal paper jams, store paper in a cool, dry location.
02. DISCLAIMER: DO NOT REUSE LABELS
We strongly advise against label re-use! Reused labels have a tendency to wrap around printer components, become stuck in the printer's paper path, and obstruct the paper path sensors. When this occurs, a paper jam occurs. Paper jams caused by labels can be more expensive to repair because of the time required to remove the label. Major components such as the fuser assembly may need to be replaced in many cases.
03. Maintain a printer on a regular basis
Over 60% of all paper jams are believed to be the result of printer neglect. It is recommended that office printers be cleaned and inspected once a year. Printers in warehouses and industrial settings should be cleaned and inspected twice a year. Routine printer maintenance is a low-cost way to avoid paper jams and other printer malfunctions.
04. Keep Scheduled Maintenance Up to Date
Intervals between scheduled printer maintenance are typically between 200,000 and 350,000 pages. When it is time to perform scheduled maintenance, your printer will display a maintenance error message. Please do not disregard this message. This service includes the replacement of the feed rollers and fuser assembly, the two most common causes of paper jams.
Printer Repair Tip: Remove a paper jam slowly. Your objective is to carefully remove the entire sheet of paper from the printer without tearing it. If the paper tears, you'll almost certainly need to schedule a printer technician.
